India's capital Wakes Up to Dangerous Haze After Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" range.

Multiple areas of the city showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to ten times the safe level established by the WHO.
Particular areas, readings of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times above healthy standards.
Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Developments
Beginning in 2020, the government had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly haze that blankets the metropolis as the cold season begins.
Nevertheless recently, the newly elected city administration approached the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a balance between "cultural practices and environment".
Legal Decision and Enforcement
To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, judges agreed to the appeal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific periods throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the metropolis, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Numerous air quality sensors throughout the city recorded contamination peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous levels seen during Diwali in at least the past three years.
Regional Consequences
The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the festivities.

The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.
Around Diwali, the amount of toxic airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to spike to significantly exceeding the peak records ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly considered as the globally most contaminated urban center.
Various Contamination Sources
This crisis in the city is resulting from a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, construction activities, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in nearby regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Throughout these areas, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, creating dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Public health and economic impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous studies.
The contaminated air results in high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can even lead to cancer.
